Below are the web design resources I find most valuable. Although my formal training is in graphic design, most of what I learned about web design I learned from the web itself.

If you're looking for general information, try dogpile. Enter your query and it will search 13 of the most popular search engines for you and display the results. They've also expanded their site to include city guides, classified, a host of other efficiencies and, of course, the all important joke-of-the-day. Voilà, one stop shopping.

ASCII/HTML Character Chart - All the HTML and ASCII codes a girl could ever want.

AnyBrowser.com - Your Source for Browser Compatibility Verification. Tons of web tools, including Web Site Viewer, which lets you see just how ugly your site looks on Web TV.

Color Chart - Hex code by Webmonkey.

Color Schemer - 826 palettes. I could look at this site all day. Oooh, pretty colors.

CSS Layout Techniques - The skinny on CSS

DNS Report - A handy way to locate DNS problems.

Dreamstime - $1 hi-res photos, need I say more?

HowStuffWorks - Helpful for the technically challenged.

IE Net Renderer - Allows you to check how a website is rendered by Internet Explorer 7, 6 or 5.5.

iStockphoto - Photos by the people, for the people. Illustrations and Flash files too. Cheap.

Lorem ipsum - generate your own custom-length filler text.

W3C CSS Validation Service - A free service that checks Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) in (X)HTML documents or standalone for conformance to W3C recommendations.

W3C Link Checker - Checks links on a web page. Imagine that.

W3C Markup Validation Service - A free service that checks web documents in formats like HTML and XHTML for conformance to W3C Recommendations and other standards.

W3Schools - A large number of free Web-building tutorials, from basic HTML and XHTML tutorials to advanced XML, XSL and WAP tutorials -- all free.

Webmonkey - The web developers' resource.

Web copy style - Because AP Style has you capitalize "Web Master".

Web Design References: Events - Looking for web conferences? Here they are.

Wikipedia - Comparison of Web Browsers - Anything and everything you've ever wanted to know about any browser (and a nice example of why IE sucks.)

WordPress - Documentation, updates and support for the blog.

Zen Garden - "A demonstration of what can be accomplished visually through CSS–based design." Numerous sites with identical code but different style sheets. And no tables. Submissions welcome.
