‘Tis summer

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I was going to post about all the fun stuff I like to do in Madison during the summer, but because buying a home, selling another, acquiring a rental business, maintaining a freelance business and working full time is requiring a fair bit of time, I’ve come to the realization that some vicarious living might be in order for ‘08. Put down the mouse, go do this stuff and report back.

  • Canoe the Wisconsin River
Rent a canoe in Sauk City and go for 3 hours or 2 days. Beautiful scenery, decent camping and a nudist camp to boot. Make sure to hit the DQ on the way home.
  • Concerts on the Square
Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. June 25 through July 30. You can put a blanket down at 3 p.m. to get a good spot, but frankly it’s a little more fun to sit farther out, where there is more space and you’re less likely to get shushed for chatting. Wine, cheese and fruit are essential.
  • Dane County Farmers’ Market
The Saturday morning market on the square is the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the country. If you don’t want to come downtown, pick a different location, there are plenty to choose from.
  • Hike around or swim across Devil’s Lake
  • Great Taste of the Midwest
August 9th. Hopefully you have tickets.
  • Hoofers
I’m partial to sailing and scuba, but if you’re looking to do something active outdoors, they probably have something for you.
  • Jazz@5
Five consecutive Wednesdays of free Jazz at 5 p.m. at the top of State, starting Aug. 6.
  • Mad-City Ski Team
Free shows at 6 p.m. on Lake Monona every Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend at Law Park. Bike down with a blanket, some friends and subs, or arrive by boat and watch from the water.
  • Madison Museum of Contemporary Art
Great architecture and gift store, artwork varies. Try the First Fridays, treat yourself to restaurant Fresco, or bring your lunch and eat for free in the rooftop garden. Also, check out the semi-annual art hop now known as Gallery Night.

  • Memorial Union Terrace
You can never go wrong on a sunny day with beers on the terrace. For those less-sunny days, the Union also offers the Rathskellar, music, food, movies, plays, the craftshop (with a full wood shop) and minicourses.
  • Olbrich Botanical Gardens
Check out their calendar of events – they offer some fun classes and tours.

  • Visit Pruitt’s Nest
Bring an inner tube. See me if you need directions to the not-so-secret location.
  • U-Pick
Because there’s nothing better then fresh-picked strawberries.
  • UW-Madison Arboretum
1260 acres of protected land set aside for research, education and recreation. Good for wandering and events & classes, or run the 6.3 mile Arb Loop.
  • Wakeboarding with Big Mike, JeffO or Kimmy
If you could land a reverse 180 for us that would really make me happy.
  • Walk, rollerblade, run or bike around Lake Monona, or on the Cap City Trail. I may actually have time to do this a few times. Call me.

Even happier now that it’s over

Hmmm, where to start. Last week turned out to be happy as expected, but also came with a fair amount of sleep deprivation and stress. We kicked off the week with a surprise birthday party for Molly at Rossario’s: all-you-can-eat spaghetti on the board for 30 of Molly’s friends and family followed by a Monday night out in Monona. It was fun, but probably not the best way to kick off one of the busier weeks of my life. You would think 3 drinks wouldn’t kill me over the course of 7 hours, but then again you’d also think I’d be smart enough not to mix beer, wine and rum. Not so much. Tuesday was rough — for a multitude of reasons….

Tuesday night we had our final walk-through at “Vilas” (which we’ve come to find out is not in the Vilas neighborhood at all, but actually Greenbush.) Unfortunately the owners had not started work on one of two major contingencies, which set off a series of distressed calls to and from the attorneys, the mortgage people, and the owners again. We learned about escrowing money for unfulfilled contingencies and the option of walking away.

Wednesday we waited, not knowing whether we would be closing or not. As an aside, there was one amusing moment where I was short $0.25 at the farmers’ market for a tomato plant and was given a discount in sympathy. An ironic situation, given I was carrying the cashier’s check for the down payment of the house in my purse. (Let the days of being cash-poor begin.)

Thursday we had a second, last-minute walk-through at 8:30 before the closing at 10:00. The results were somewhat disappointing, and part of the work will have to be re-done, but at that point it seemed more advantageous to fix it ourselves then continue to deal with the owners (who are nice people, but dealing with some unfortunate circumstances.) We walked into the closing to find my mortgage banker (brother Nate), my attorney (my neighbor), the Title Co. rep (who I went to high school with), the sellers, and their attorney (also recognizable), and chatted about Parkwood Hills, where the majority of the group had lived at some point. Aside from being acutely aware that I was putting down semi-permanent roots in the smallest town ever, the closing went smoothly. And so, Schroeds and I now own a 3-unit home in the heart of Greenbush. Yay!

There was little time for revelry though — we still have two homes to sell and Jeff’s celebrations were just beginning. On Saturday we enjoyed watching Shirley Abrahamson who talked about “parting, partying and packing” — how apropos — and David Walsh, among others, who ushered Jeff through graduation from the Executive MBA Program. A reception at the Fluno Center followed, and then a great party at Jeff’s with lots of friends, family, cake and beerpong capped off the night. We also slept at Vilas Saturday night, which was a lot like camping (particularly given Schroeder’s tendency to open windows even when it’s 43° outside.) Pretty good feeling to be in our new home though. Having stuff like cups, toothbrushes and furniture will be gravy.

Sunday we took a little more time to ‘party’ with Dres & Les who were in town for the weekend before getting back to the ‘packing’ and ‘parting’ portion of life. And so begins another crazy-busy week….

All kinds of Happy this week

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

First and foremost, Happy Mom’s day to my Mom and Grandma, and to Matt’s mom, who gets the double-Happy mom’s day/birthday-day today. Tomorrow we wish Molly the first of many Happy 29th Birthdays, Thursday is Happy Closing Day (knock on wood), on Friday we wish Dad a Happy Birthday, and Saturday is Happy Graduation Day for friends, cousins and JeffO, who will be one of the youngest to graduate from UW’s Executive MBA program. To celebrate, Molly and Jeff have invited a few friends over to grill out, reminisce about the college experience and play drinking games. (Only in Wisconsin will you find Executive MBA graduation parties where 85% of the party will participate in a competitive game of Flip cup.)

Here’s to a joyful and exciting week, let the fun begin!
