This weeks’ kudos

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008
  • To Anna, who just received word that she got into OHSU’s physician assistant master’s program.
  • To Abby, who made it to state swimming in 3 events and 3 relays, and still managed a solid performance despite being sick with the flu. It was fun to cheer her on, if only for 31 seconds.
  • To Deb & Curt, who had a 9-lb. 11-oz. baby girl named Kendra on Sunday. Kendra was somewhat indecisive about leaving the womb so we’re all glad she finally committed. Particularly Deb. All are happy and healthy.
  • To Deb & Paul, who got engaged last week! And to Paul again, for accepting a new job as VP of Product Dev. at TomoTherapy.
  • To Jack, who ran 25.7 miles for fun and personal challenge. Weird, but impressive.
  • And to Schroeder and Dress, who is on day 9 of the cleanse and doing well.

More Jeff & Molly wedding photos

Bridesmaids pose in the church at Jeff & Molly's wedding.

Jeff & Molly were able to buy the rights to their wedding photos, so I’ve added several of them to the Jeff & Molly wedding web page on my Flickr account. Jeff has posted all 500 of them on Snapfish, where they can be purchased at very reasonable prices, so if you’re interested, contact him for the appropriate URL. Or, if a 1-minute visual summary is more your style, check out Jeff & Molly’s page on the photographer’s website.

Barack-star parking

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

As many of you know, parking is limited on campus, so when I drive I park just east of the Kohl Center which is about 4 blocks away from my office. When it’s not 45° below zero out, it’s a nice 10-minute walk. It also affords me an occasional fun photographic opportunity when I come across scenes like ice bucky, full snow shoots or your occasional half-naked college student who drank too much the night before and passed out in the residence hall lawn (sorry, not posted). Tonight’s walk was one of the best as thousands of people packed the Kohl Center to hear Barack Obama speak. I had planned to go myself but the crowds were huge, the line was long, the air was cold and the urge to watch it live online in flannel pjs while sipping hot chocolate was too great, given I had already made up my mind about him after reading Dreams from my Father and The Audacity of Hope last year. Smart, hard-working and humble, Obama would definitely be a change in the white house. I’ll leave it at that. At any rate, here are a few photos (follow the photostream) from my walk to my parking space tonight. What they don’t show is all 20,000+ (?) people who showed up for the event and the palpable excitement amidst the falling snow.

Yes, we can.

I saw this video in San Francisco last weekend in the days leading up to Super Tuesday, between frequent TV ads from the Kennedy family and the big public endorsement of Obama by Maria Shriver, Caroline Kennedy and Oprah. I was excited to post it, but I see everyone under the sun has beat me to it. Regardless of whom you’re voting for, it’s a hopeful video, with a great message. If nothing else, maybe Obama Girl, created by a UW grad, will finally get a little less attention now. One can hope.

Betrothed!

It is with much excitement and happiness that I’m finally reporting the engagement of Stacy & Jason earlier this month. Having just returned from San Francisco and witnessed the apparent joy, beautiful ring and eager anticipation in person, I’m now ready (it’s all about me, no?) to spread the good word. The details: Jason hails from Boston, works as Director of Instructional Technology for a high school, likes biking, writes screen plays, and is “the funniest, sweetest, smartest guy I know” in Stacy’s unbiased opinion. Which is pretty impressive, given the company she keeps (i.e. Judge Browning, Harvard law-types, myself). They’re looking at an intimate spring ‘09 wedding in Port Townsend but are currently most excited about spending time together in Cali this summer, after which Stace will join Jason in Boston, and begin working for a local firm.

While we’re on the topic, I also want to send out another belated ‘yay’ to Kim Baker & Kevin Kruchten, who announced their engagement late last year and will be getting married in Lake Tahoe over Labor Day Weekend. Kimmy’s fun & stylish yet grounded perspective has been a great addition to the Madison crowd, and it’s fantastic to see such good friends take the next step! Rumor has it JeffO has already ordered monogrammed towels.

How do ya like them Apples?

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the arrival of a new Mac Pro after having abused my existing Mac for nearly four long years. While it’s easy to get excited about the two quad-core processors, double-digit GBs of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 graphics card and multiple, big, internal drives, I’m also really looking forward to using the current iLife apps and even using a new mouse and keyboard. I have high hopes for reorganizing everything in a way that makes a bit more sense, now that I have the space, which should facilitate working in Flash and video. Now if only the video card wasn’t back-ordered, and I could buy myself an extra week/month/year of life to play on my computer, my inner geek would be content.

In addition to ordering a new computer, I ordered a new classic silver 80 GB video iPod kind of on a whim. Due to a looming expiration date on a gift certificate, I didn’t get a chance to look into these too much and hastily ordered one online late at night, about an hour before my gift certificate expired. 30 hours later the iPod was sitting on my desk, from China, personally engraved. How is that possible? As it turns out, it’s much more useful than my previous iPods. The UI is great, and I’ve been watching and listening to all sorts of great podcasts; in particular, This American Life, In Treatment, a variety of PBS shows, and this weekend in SF, I listened to “Walks of a Lifetime — San Francisco”, and learned more in 20 minutes walking around Union Square than in my last half-dozen visits. Last week I actually learned how to bake good no-knead bread with a European crust from Cook’s Illustrated while riding the bus! All for free, downloaded from iTunes. So, as you can tell, I’m a fan, and looking for additional podcast recommendations. What do you listen to?
