A big thanks to Cyndy for hosting yet another Woods Women’s Wild Weekend at her lake home in Merrimac and to the aunts, uncles’ significant others, cousins and, well, Sue (my knowledge of genealogy terms only goes so far) for the plethora of good food and conversation. I’m pretty sure that Party in a Bucket and bunt cake aren’t on the vegan menu but I can assure you that only enhances their taste. Our new hike this year was out to Ferry Bluff, which has a great view of the Wisconsin River and surrounding area. Great to see everybody!

A site for sore eyes

I have found another material object which brings me great joy. After lamenting about the weight, age and size of my current 20″CRT for a number of years I broke down Friday afternoon and ordered a Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP 24-inch wide-screen flat panel monitor. Four days later it’s now sitting in my home office. It’s huge. I can see details on photos that I never even knew existed and use two applications, side by side—with tool bars—at the same time! And it rotates! I’m most amazed by the price though, since the last time I bought a monitor was 10 years ago… including taxes, shipping and an extended 5-year warranty it was still considerably less than half of what I paid for my last monitor. Score one for technology.

Ah, to be young and unemployed…

Yet another cool trip by Jack.

Six Feet Over

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

Probably due to the fact that I’ve never had HBO, or cable for that matter, I was never much of a TV-series watcher. But then last year I was lured into watching the first few episodes of Six Feet Under on DVD, and instantly I was hooked. Keith, alone, made the show worth watching, but the well-thought-out plots, witty writing and very unique, quirky characters wrapped up in a compelling hour of commercial-free drama turned into somewhat of an addiction for me. The almost year-long wait for season 5 to come out was torture. And then, suddenly, it was gone — it all came to a screeching halt a couple weeks ago when we watched the big finale. When it was over I wanted to write Alan Ball and personally thank him for a finale worthy of the 63 engrossing episodes that preceded it. Every series finale should end this way, but none would be so appropriate to the subject matter as this one. If you’ve seen it, you know what I mean.

So now I find myself missing the characters… looking for the cast in new shows, visiting the Six Feet Under website, and listening to the soundtrack. It’s obsessive, I know. I’m even considering watching the first three seasons of commentary, since I didn’t catch on to that special feature until season 4. I need help.

*In case you’re running out to rent the DVDs I should mention this is very much an adult show. They managed to incorporate violence, profanity, gore, drugs, sex and death in a (mostly) non-gratuitous way that actually adds to the development of the characters. That said, Mom, this may not be the show for you.
