The annual search for the parental Christmas tree took place yesterday with a voyage to Paint’s Tree Farm near Poynette, WI. It turned out to be a beautiful day (translation: sunny and cold instead of cloudy and deathly cold) and all the trees were snow-covered due to Friday’s snowfall. Present were the parents, Dex, Jack and Jeff. The selection wasn’t great, but Mom managed to find a good tree and it was chopped down and dragged to the car in relatively short order. Hoisting and securing it to the car turned out to be challenge number two, and not quite perfected as Jeff and I noticed an increasing number of branches on the left side of the car, and fewer on the right, as we departed. A stop to recenter the tree and consume 4,000 calories at the local DeForest Culvers rectified all that and we were on our way again. Follow-up: Here’s the end result on Christmas morning.

JenO’s big news, revised
Wednesday, November 23rd, 2005It appears I should have waited a couple more days before posting that last entry. Then I could have included this.
Sibling update
Wednesday, November 9th, 2005Since the most exciting thing that’s happend to me in the last week involved successful horizontal alignment via absolute positioning in CSS, I thought I’d provide a sibling update as their lives are currently much more entertaining than mine.
First off, Jack sent some cool fall photos of himself on his unicycle taken while cycling in the bluffs around LaCrosse. What’s crazy (aside from the obvious) is that he was alone so he took the photos with his camera on self-timer. Now that requires talent. You can see more on his Flickr site.
While Jack was jumping off cliffs on one wheel Jeff was driving ten of them (in the form of a big yellow Penske truck towing a big yellow wakeboard boat) through a blizzard in the mountains. 236.1 gallons of gas later he arrived in Chicago (after a brief stop in Madison) where he has since taken up new residence with his girlfriend Molly. And he’s starting a new job today. So not much going on with him.
JenO’s big news is that she and Anil are buying some undeveloped land in Snowden, WA. Check out the view of Mt. Adams! Plans are to put in a custom yurt and a bunch of bee hives for now.
Now, back to coding….
Classic.
Saturday, November 5th, 2005Hypothetically speaking, if someone commissioned me, as an artist, to build a sculpture which brought forth my impression of football and football players I have a feeling my design would never see the light of day. Although I’m sure there are plenty of bright, kind, intelligent players out there I haven’t heard about or met, my personal experiences and those I read about in the news would lead me to, er, erect a simple, cement, oversized, phalic-shaped sculpture, with the almighty football on top.
But instead of me, the UW commissioned an internationally acclaimed sculptor whose art is known for its metaphors. Guess what he came up with.
You’ve gotta love that he titled it “Nail’s Tales”… subtle spelling liberties notwithstanding.
Happy 83rd birthday!
Tuesday, November 1st, 2005I’d like to wish an extra special happy birthday to my Grandpa Woods who was born on this day in 1922. Hope you had a good day, free of all things pomegranate, and enjoyed spending time with Grandma and Lisa. We all hope you feel better soon!
