Milken for Milhaupt

Thursday, October 27th, 2005

Huge congratulations to my former college roomie Julie Cunningham (previously Milhaupt) for receiving the 2005 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award. Julie is a chemistry teacher at Lake Mills High School and, apparently, a really good one. This award isn’t something you can apply or even be nominated for… the foundation searches for 100 of the best educators in the country and then surprises them with a trip to a conference in DC and a bit of cash. (So drinks are on Julie next time). Anyway, it’s a great tribute to a great person who rarely takes credit for her talents.

All in a day’s work

Today is a good example of why 1) I’ve remained with the University as long as I have and 2) I’ve remained in Madison as long as I have. First off, all the leaves are changing; there’s a lot of yellow and orange around and even some weird shades of green that only seem to appear in autumn. Secondly, I lost my parking pass. This of course is bad, but today somebody called to tell me it had been found at my gym (far west side of town) and was now at the transportation office for me to pick up. This saves me $65, any further bitterness toward the university parking situation, and reinstills my faith in humanity, which when you think about it is well worth the stress of losing it in the first place. Then for lunch, I went on a two-mile walk which encompassed State Street, the state capitol, the local farmers’ market where I purchased the cutest tiny pumpkins ever, and then Potbelly’s, home of my favorite soup and cookie. Which is impressive considering I had less than $4 when I left. And now I have to post photos of Bill Gates, who made a surprise visit to an entry-level computer science class full of stunned students. So, for now, I’m basking in the glow of autumn, pumpkins and happiness – an unusual moment in the life of a state-employed web designer.

Happy Birthdays

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

First off, Happy Birthday to Timmy, Darby, Sara and JeffO. Saturday night was spent in front of a big bon fire on Picnic Point celebrating the former three birthdays. It was unseasonably warm and the perfect night to be outside. We even had the nostalgic experience of being busted by a very loud police woman who insisted if we dumped out all our alcohol RIGHT NOW she wouldn’t issue us all $250 tickets. Apparently you can’t drink on UW property. She relaxed a bit once she realized there were great-grandchildren/great-grandparents in attendance but for a moment we were getting ready to run. Ah, memories.

The other birthday belonged to JeffO, who turned 27 and celebrated by traveling back to San Fran from Seattle for work, but had celebrated in other ways earlier. He also announced recently that he has accepted a promotion with GE Healthcare as a PACS Remote Online Center Engineer and will be moving to Chicago next month. Congratulations JeffO! We look forward to your return! And your wakeboard boat’s return too. =]
