Balmy

Tuesday, January 25th, 2005

For the most depressing time of the year, it’s been a pretty good couple of days here in Wisco. We actually surpassed the freezing mark both yesterday and today, skies have been sunny and now there is a beautiful moon out.

Bring on the gear

Sunday, January 23rd, 2005

Turns out it’s not the ice boaters who are nuts after all, it’s the kiteboarders, and possibly even more so, the idiot who trudges out on the frozen lake to take photos of them. (Not to mention the guy who rides, his bike to the lake in 6 inches of fresh snow, towing a small trailer for his board and kite but that’s another story…. ) Anyway, Saturday finally brought snow, blue skies and 25-30 mph winds, so Mark and Bryan took to Monona. If you can get past the snow constantly whipping you in the face, falling backward onto ice anytime the wind dies and losing all feeling in your extremities, kiteboarding really does seem like a great sport. After voicing my concerns I was told “you just need the right gear.” Does this sound familiar?

Also, happy birthday to Rob, Karl and Jade!

Sailing should be done in the tropics

They’re holding the DN World Championship Ice Boating regatta on Lake Mendota today, which I can conveniently watch from the comfort of my warm office by turning my head slightly to the right. These people are nuts. There’s not even that much wind today and they still look like they’re going 40+ mph. Brrr.

Enjoying the January lull

Tuesday, January 18th, 2005

Just enjoyed a long 3-day weekend, thanks to Mr. MLK. Sadly it was too chilly to do much outside—negative degree temperatures and the great outdoors don’t mix for me—but I did have my first aerial dance class, which was interesting. We started out with the basics, getting familiar with the trapeze… doing simple hangs and swings and finding stable positions. Pretty fun, but rough on the hands. And shoulders as I found out the next day.

I also finally got to see Bryan play, after numerous failed attempts on my part over the past few months. The event was Wave Aid, a Red Cross benefit for the tsunami victims that featured six bands and a silent auction. Bryan plays sax with the Clyde Band, among others. He’s good.

New Year’s Eve… in fine fashion

Sunday, January 2nd, 2005

The New Year started in fine fashion with Miles, Stace, Pam, Peter, Adam, Jody, Bryan and myself at Fyfe’s, which was quite festive. It continued in fine fashion at the Great Dane and Paul’s Club, and apparently a few places after that for some of our group. Someone was even out until 5:30 a.m. for the second year in a row but I won’t name names.
