Open Water

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

I went with some of my scuba friends to see Open Water today. Although it has received mixed reviews from critics, I thought it was fantastic. Everything is so over-produced nowadays, it was great to see a low-budget ($120k) independent film that relies on actual suspense instead of overpriced special effects.

A camera is worth 100,000 words

My little digital 1.3 megapixel camera is finally dead. Purchased in early 2001 from the FoodUSA liquidation for $55, it now refuses to turn on. New camera recommendations welcome.

Gals Getaway

Saturday, August 21st, 2004

This weekend was the annual Gals Getaway (formerly called the Wild Women’s Weekend) to which all the females on the Woods’ side, along with anybody who has married or is dating a Woods is invited. This year there were 6 aunts, 3 cousins, 1 mom, 1 uncle’s girlfriend and 1 sister in attendance. Yes, JenO is in town. The main game plan seemed to be eating but we also went boating, jogging, hiking and then boating some more. Thanks to Cyndy for putting us all up at their cabin! Great time.

Spike!

Stacy is in town! Or was, since I am now belatedly updating. Sadly, she has now come and gone, but not before we got a chance to shop, see a movie, eat way too much, go to jazz@5 (kinda), run around Lake Monona, visit most of our favorite establishments, see a bunch of her Madison friends, play Battle of the Dads™, deliver fresh Stace-caught Halibut from Alaska, drink bloody marys on a wednesday afternoon, and spend some quality time on the terrace. Good time all around, excluding a few rough hours Thursday morning. =]

The brothers Rios

Sunday, August 15th, 2004

Happy birthday to Antoine, who put on a pretty good performance on the wakeboard and slalom ski today in spite of a solid night of celebration last night. Kudos also to brother Pompeyo who got up almost instantly on the wakeboard his first time out and made more progress in 5 minutes than most people make in a month. Speaking of which, I continue to have some difficulties with the new board. Arg.

beer

Saturday, August 14th, 2004

In the last 24 hours I’ve learned a lot about beer and been given the opportunity to sample about 500 varieties. Note that I am still able to type. The festivities started Friday night with a hops-harvesting/grill out at Stiers’ place. We filled half a grocery bag with Cascade hop cones from Stiers’ yard, which look like little soft green pinecones and give beer it’s bitterness, taste and aroma once they’re dried and added to the brew. The big beer event was Saturday though – The 18th Annual Great Taste of the Midwest. We arrived an hour early to stand in line (note in the photo the line goes back to the bus way off in the distance) and soon were ready to go with tasting glass in one hand, the other sporting a bright orange bracelet prominently displaying the phone number of Union Cab. (Excellent targeted marketing.) Once inside the fenced-in area the beer was flowing freely, new friends were made, and a good time was had by all 5,000 participants. The generous and newly-wed Mrs. Lyra then invited us back to her nearby home on Monona Bay for a bonfire, food and much-needed water. I also met her pets, Barley and Hops. It was a beautiful evening and a great way to end the day.

Just to allay my mother’s concerns of alcoholism, I will add that I also ran the Depot to Depot 5 Miler Race from Black Earth to Mazomanie early Saturday morning. Great course on back-county highways and the last half mile is forest trail. Got my best time yet. Still slow, but improving.

bizzarro world

I don’t know which way is up anymore. I’m swamped with UW work during what is supposed to be our "down" month. I’m swamped with freelance work which I avoid like the plague in August in order to go boating as much as possible. My new wakeboard has been used once. Dressler, evangelist for the unwed, has gotten himself engaged. The temperature this morning was 48° – in August. All my Apple products are crashing. I want to go back to July.

Let the music play

Monday, August 9th, 2004

I finally investigated the ‘play count’ feature in iTunes. Below are the top 10 most frequently played tunes on Julie’s iPod. Variety is good, right?

History Repeating / Propellerheads
Hot N Cold / Basement Jaxx
Gonna Be Some Changes Made / Bruce
Hornsby
Everybody Got Their Something / Nikka Costa
Sex Laws / Beck
Bitter Sweet Symphony / The Verve
Oh / Dave Matthews
Rock Star / NERD
If You’re Here When I Get Back / John Eddie
Heavy Metal Drummer / Wilco

Maiden voyage on the hyperlite divine

Saturday, August 7th, 2004

I awoke this morning to dreary skies, cool temps and absolutely no wind. Perfect wakeboarding weather for a Saturday. Abandoned by my wakeboard friends who were either out of town for the weekend or didn’t see the beatitude in jumping in the lake in 64° weather early Saturday morning, I pleaded with the parents to go out and they eventually gave in. Mom kindly took photos and Dad even did some slalom skiing. Go parents!

So, being a 134, the board felt a little heavy at first compared to Tammy’s Liquid Force Trip 128, but definitely tracked better. Between the two boards we should be able to cover most conditions fairly well. The first couple runs took a little getting used to and there were more than a few awkward moments, but I eventually got the hang of it. The true test will come in choppier water, where it should really perform well. But Yay! I finally have a new board!
