Parking

Friday, July 30th, 2004

Every spring you have to apply for a parking permit at the UW. I use my car fairly often for work during work hours and also during lunch for personal errands, etc. For these reasons I park in the Tower Of Pestilence parking lot which requires a permit more expensive then most. Not a problem, it facilitates my life greatly.

This week we received parking assignments and not only did I not get a permit for the T.O.P lot, but I received no permit at all (i.e. “take the bus”). So, come August, the UW is no longer going to allow me to pay them for the privledge of driving to work, or, better yet, using my car for work. Guess how well that went over.

Cameraphobe

Went boating with Mel, Matt, Jeanne and Eric last night on Mendota. Stiers refused to be caught on film and is so represented by the pistachio sitting in the well of the engine cover.

What do you know, drugs and alcohol don’t mix

Made it out to the Memorial Union terrace Friday night and discovered the combination of echinacea, cold medicine and beer do bad things to me and then slept from about 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. Sunday except for a couple hours Saturday night, during which I ended up at the terrace again to see Phat Phunktion. Great concert! Turns out cold medicine goes much better with Gatorade. Sunday I had a great time rollerblading with Cindy but still had a fever so had to skip out on boating, which was sad, but apparently much needed. It’s nice to get to work on a Monday morning and not be exhausted for a change.

The Blue Water Eagle

Thursday, July 22nd, 2004

Tonight I went wakeboarding on Lake Monona with Tammy and Bert behind Bert’s ‘95 Blue Water Eagle. Nice boat, nice wake, surprisingly calm water. Live music from the Monona Terrace. Not bad.

Another full weekend

Monday, July 19th, 2004

Ventured north to Buckhorn State Park for a brief respite in the woods. While canoeing an interpretive trail we came across deer playing in the water, a huge owl and no deep water. The camp site was great… a little peninsula all to ourselves with a small bay on one side and a view of the beautiful sunset over Castle Rock Lake on the other. Very porkulent.

Sunday was filled with all sorts of variety. Tammy and I met out in Dane, WI for a baby shower for Deb at Laurie’s and then headed to Monona to go boating with Kirk and friends on his super air nautique. After a stop at Christy’s we wound up on the south shore of Waubesa looking for calm water. The weight of 7 people and 3 fat sacs proved to be a little intimidating, but Eric and Kirk didn’t seem to have any problems. At least until the end of the night which, hopefully, was not also the end of Kirk’s wakeboarding season.

Going out on a limb here

3:45 pm update: I think it’s safe to say the Tower of Pestilence is going to get wet.

Off to the races

Friday, July 16th, 2004

My dad and I raced in our first 420 regatta last night, which turned out to be about 10 boats, 7 of which were sailing team or Hoofer instructors. Grim. Missed the start in our first race and came in dead last but managed to not lose the next two races, which is about as positive a thing as you can say about our performance. Pretty fun though, and I thought we did surprisingly well for not knowing the rules, the course or, on occasion, which mark we were headed for…

Concerts with Deb & Tammy

Thursday, July 15th, 2004

Finally made it to a concert on the square Wednesday. Happy crowd, weather was perfect, and our blanket was teeming with berries and wine. And lemonade for Deb. =]

Big Mike’s first good-bye party

Sunday, July 11th, 2004

Saturday was the day of Big Mike, who turned 33 and announced his impending departure from the Madison/Janesville area to become Director of IS at a credit union in Kansas City. This is sad. Having all the more reason to celebrate the day though, we started at Governor Nelson state park at noon with boats and brats and tubing (my first tubing experience, pretty fun) and eventually wandered over to the terrace to listen to Honor Among Thieves. The Pub was next, from which Mike officially retired and then on to Suite Pat’s house for pizza and something akin to salsa dancing. And before long Dave, Nature Boy and the birds outside were all singing. A solid 18-hour party. We will all miss Big Mike.

On an unrelated note, check out tonight’s sunset, photographed and uploaded from my porch. Yes, the wireless network is finally working.

Not a bad weekend

Did some hiking last weekend. In Alaska.
