Good wake and sotted flake

Sunday, June 27th, 2004

Another summer weekend come and gone, with good times and bad. Saturday started well enough with a trip to the farmers’ market and a few good runs with Schroeds and Big Mike, but that night I looked into the eye of tony the tiger and found only a flake, more sotted than frosted. Alas. Sunday saw us all at the terrace enjoying the day and watching the storm roll in. No thunder and lightning though, much to the chagrin of Deb who we left smiling in the wind and rain, pregnant, to teach a sailing lesson. Pretty cool chick.

The other side of the track

I frequently comment about my spectacular view of University Bay from the Tower Of Pestilence, but I also have a great view of the Dan McClimon race track from my window. Beginning pole vaulters in particular have provided us hours of entertainment at work. Last night though I found myself at the track looking up at the T.O.P. for a change and watching Tony run the 3000m.

Bit of a storm last night.

A true babble… long overdue

Monday, June 21st, 2004

This weekend was a reflection of summer in full swing. I ducked out of a near-empty office at 4 on Friday and headed over to Racine with Tony and Maggie for the annual Lighthouse run. I successfully achieved my goal of beating both of them, even had a few minutes to spare. Granted they ran 10 miles and I ran 4, but they did have a 10+ minute head start (and run for a sponsored team). We non-runners take the little victories where we can get them.

After returning Saturday I met up with JenO and the parents for boating on Lake Mendota in the best conditions I’ve ever seen on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The wind dropped from 20 to 1 mph in less than an hour, so there was minimal traffic and chop. So flat in fact that Dad, JenO and I all gave slalom skiing a shot, which went astoundingly well. The wakeboard may have a competitor for my attention this summer… an idea strongly reinforced by the ensuing wipe out I had on our old hyperlite which left me temporarily blind and slightly unconscious. 3″ fins are a product of the devil.

Boating was followed by a fabulous father’s day steak dinner made by his fabulous daughters which was a study in gluttony featuring fresh farmer’s market produce, sangria (shocker) and copious amounts of strawberries, cake, whipped cream and chocolate. Attempts to be social afterward were largely thwarted by food coma and residual trauma from the wakeboarding incident.

Sunday followed with a grill-out at Matt & Mel’s and their selection of home-made refreshments and then Hefeweizen-to-go for sailing with Dad on father’s day. Unlike the day before it was a bit windy though and being pummeled by large waves while hiking out in 70° weather on an increasingly-cloudy day proved to be a bit chilly. Still great to get out sailing though, certainly beats shoveling.

Wasl is not a word

JenO’s in town for work, which so far has resulted in bee hats, Mad Libs, a midnight trip to Cafe Momo on Tuesday and salsa, sangria and Scrabble (wasl!) with le tigre and numerous General Mills trial-size products on Wednesday. I should have won Scrabble. Stupid 1988 dictionary.

Ah, summer.

All is well with the world again as I just spent a solid 9 hours on the boat. Wakeboarding, terrace, night boating. Zima citrus. Summer.

Begging to be “borrowed”

Wireless networks are not my friend. I just spent 3.5 hours on the phone with Charter, DoIT, and Apple tech support, trying to set up an ad hoc wireless network using my desktop G4 as a base station. I finally got it working but it only reaches about 8 feet, which clearly is not going to support my end goal of updating sites while lounging by the pool. Another fun feature is that every time I restart my iBook, it throws me on to my neighbor’s network, which ironically covers every room in my home. There’s a very tempting solution here.

So long dial up (ha)

Charter Communications, who may have the worst website (I’m not even going to link to it) in the history of the universe when viewed in Safari on a Mac, has physically come and gone. I have re-entered the age of technology with cable access which supposedly delivers up to 3 Mbps, which is roughly 50 times faster than I was getting with dial-up. My life is about to improve drastically.

It’s high time

Finally, a summer day in Madison. Tammy and I made it to the farmers’ market this morning and, being a bit over zealous about the whole situation, I bought a hanging basket which was WAY too big for the little pole I hung it on. After a very long, much-needed nap I went wakeboarding for the first time in Madison this season, thanks to Justin who came through with a vehicle that could tow the boat. The weather was a little grey but it was great to be out again. Bit chilly tho — 60° water wakes you up pretty quick. Justin, myself and Jack (photo by Tammy) | Justin’s back roll
