Another ex-boyfriend gets engaged

Sunday, April 27th, 2003

Congratulations to Greg on his engagement. Ironically my parents almost ruined the whole thing when they ran into him at the farmers market that morning by congratulating him in front of his fiancé an hour before it happened. They were talking about his new CD but it took a few nervous seconds before he realized that. Serves him right for getting engaged on my birthday. ; )

Good fortune abounds

Monday, April 21st, 2003

In the last 24 hours Stace has been accepted to Law school (at just one of the myriad colleges in Boston), ASU buddy Bill Ballowe Binch from Boston announced his engagement, and JeffO… well here. Not to mention I now have a brand new kitchen floor and Schroeder has recently become a dad (not the best time for a new floor, ah well). And I survived another 4/19 death day. AND Saturday I am “running” (using that term loosely) the Crazylegs with 10 friends and then eating spaghetti off of a large table with even more of them in celebration of the 3rd anniversary of my 29th birthday. All good.

Some like it hot

Tuesday, April 15th, 2003

Yesterday hit 86° which is pretty unusual in April in Wisconsin. I slept with my windows open and had the best night of sleep ever. Which is handy because it’s now 10:15 in the morning and the tower of pestilence is already approaching 80 degrees. Lunch induced food coma is going to be hard to ward off once we hit 85. Of course today’s heat will be a fond memory on Thursday when it begins to snow outside and the HVAC guys get the AC working. If there’s one thing you can say for the State, they’re predictable.

Finally, a “quiet” weekend at home

Monday, April 14th, 2003

Had my first weekend “in town” in a month and still managed to put 500 miles on my car. Which is a good thing. Saturday was spent at the Blackhawk Farms Raceway where Stiers and I learned all about flagging, taping, timing and starting. Very cool, although I now have the urge to flash blue flags at people on University Avenue who won’t get out of my way.

Sunday I ventured south again for a brief trip to Ikea, a party at my Uncle Bill’s celebrating my Uncle John’s 50th birthday, and to reclaim the parents at ORD from across the pond. All good, except that I made the mistake of listening to the audio file “Who Stole my Cheese” which I think is the most over-simplified, obvious, unrealistic “inspirational story” I’ve ever heard. Sorry Spencer Johnson, M.D., I was not impressed. The parents had a good time in Spain though – amazed by the architecture, art, people and food – so getting the details on the trip home was far more entertaining.

‘Cun ‘03

Saturday, April 5th, 2003

My friends and I have survived yet another trip to Cancun. Present were JenO, myself, Schroeder, Stace and Anil. Unfortunately we had some cloudy weather the first few days but we found other things to do. Math Schrotum impressed us all by bringing home the gold in the sailing regatta, Jenil went to Cozumel for some scuba diving, Stace spent a day in Ek-Ballam and we all risked our lives and the lives of others in wicked battles of pong. (I remain undeated, just for the record.) The rest of the time was spent swimming in the pool and ocean, playing Grass and studying the nurishment of the locals. It seems high time that Cancun had it’s own page on this site so stay tuned… more photos forthcoming.

April 2003 update

Tuesday, April 1st, 2003

Got another smudge on the passport last weekend which now means my New Year’s Resolutions are 37.5% completed. Yay me. Eerily similar to the Honduras trip, the Cun ‘03 adventure sported partly crummy weather, another left leg personal trauma, and we all still had a great time. JenO and I cheated death in the ocean waves, Stace nearly became an expatriate but settled for a trip to Ek-Ballam instead, we all became better at elevator games, and the boys in particular practiced their hydration skills. Often. Next year we may have to venture elsewhere though – as Eric pointed out the yearly Cun trip is starting to take on a Groundhog Day Movie-ish quality.

The first half of March was whirlwind fun with numerous parties, shamrock shakes, driving school, snowboarding, knitting class (I’m all about variety), and going out far, far too much. Which is why I spent the second half of March in bed with some version of the middle-eastern death virus. I slept almost constantly but in my few alert moments I did manage to knit half a scarf. And to top it off, only 17 days after the much anticipated arrival of Gourdo IV (I call him Ivy) his dual processor module died, causing much pain and sorrow for all involved. Happily the nice guys at DoIT got him up and running in less than a week at no charge, but not before I had my first flicker of resentment toward Apple. Hopefully it was a freak occurrence.

I should also take a moment to be happy that the members of my immediate family are all safe and sound considering their travel schedule of late. JackO just returned from a college spring break ski trip at Jackson Hole, JeffO from Steamboat, San Fran and before that Japan, and JenO from South Korea and the Cun. The parents are currently traveling through Spain, which seems to be going well. Nothing says ‘cheap airline tickets’ like war apparently. I’m about to launch into a tirade about the war, so I’ll just stop typing now.
