The kitchen floor has been ordered. Amen.

Goodbye grey and yellow linoleum
Thursday, March 27th, 2003But I’m getting bettah…
Saturday, March 22nd, 2003I am sick of being sick and am going to extremes to get better. In the last 24 hours I’ve eaten 6 kiwis and a whole cantaloupe, which is quite a statement coming from someone who doesn’t eat fruit very often. I’ve also stopped watching war coverage and rented Blue Crush to watch myriad times and mourn over my misspent youth in the midwest when I clearly could have been a surfer queen. Happy birthday mom.
Arrogant shrub
Thursday, March 20th, 2003JenO doesn’t have SARS after all, which is good, but I think I may. I’ve slept 38 of the last 46 hours and my sore throat, headache, earache and general grumpiness don’t seem to be improving at all. To make matters worse my NEW computer got sick on Tuesday – looks like it has a bad processor, which, of course, is back ordered. So with no computer and not enough energy to make it outdoors I’m left watching 24-hr war coverage which has left me feeling very unpatriotic and very anti Mr. Bush. I think the military action plan which they’ve named “Shock and Awe” sums it up pretty well. The troops aren’t supporting Americans at all, they’re supporting our government’s ego.
The downside of being a world traveler
Sunday, March 16th, 2003JenO has pneumonia. Which is bad in itself but considerably more worrisome when you take into account she just got off a plane from Seoul, South Korea today, about 6 hours after the CDC issued a travel advisory suggesting that persons planning nonessential travel to eastern Asia refrain from doing so on account of the “mystery pneumonia” outbreak. She seems to think all will be well but the whole thing is a little unnerving.
Huh.
Tuesday, March 11th, 2003Just drove to work behind a truck that said “Your hole is our goal!” with a big dodge ram emblem in the middle of the sentence and no other kind of signage. Interesting.
The pursuit of leisure
Sunday, March 9th, 2003March is turning out to be all about variety. Between Wednesday and Saturday nights I went snowboarding, started knitting class, went to the scuba social, attended Madison sports car club driving school, listened to Doug’s band play honkey tonk at Snick’s, worked out at the gym and then studied the finer points of beer at Matt and Mel’s home brewery. I will be nothing if not well rounded by the end of this month.
Snow isn’t boring when you’re snowboarding
Thursday, March 6th, 2003I went snowboarding last night. Which, if you know me at all is a pretty big deal since I’ve avoided the sport (and downhill skiing) like the plague since birth, whereas all my siblings excel at it. I couldn’t say no to this opportunity though… it was a beautiful night, we had the biggest snowfall of the season the night before, I had Hughy to teach me, Stace for moral support, and a free lift ticket… and now I’m a convert. I was prepared for the worst but it was much easier than I thought, especially compared to wakeboarding. For starters the ground doesn’t change or move on you, and there’s no boat chop, which is nice. Plus you can control everything yourself, theoretically anyway… at least you’re not at the mercy of a clueless boat driver. We were lucky in that there was no one there – at one point I went down the hill and, at a rest stop (read: found myself unexpectedly face down in the snow) I got up and realized I was completely alone on the hill. Continuing on down all I could hear was the sound of the board carving through the snow. Very, very cool. Got home at midnight. Can’t wait to go again.
P.S. Am drinking shamrock shake.
Sad Tuesday
Wednesday, March 5th, 2003My March happiness took a downturn last night. Aside from an occasional happy hour I rarely venture out to the bars on weeknights any more but last night I was really excited to go out for Club Tavern’s Annual Fat Tuesday party, which is always disturbingly hedonistic and much fun. Unphased by the 5″ of snow that was falling, the gp and I set out to find that the nearest parking was about 1/2 mile away. Still excited I trudged through the snow, waited in line, paid the $10 cover and then realized that there was another line – not moving – to get to the inside (warm) bar where my friends were. After 20 minutes of standing in line by myself – still not moving – I decided to bail on the whole thing and as I was leaving a small avalanche of snow slid down the tent and landed squarely on my head, burying me up to my knees. Which struck me as funny at the time but as I was trudging back to my car in the blizzard, soaking wet, it seemed much less amusing. To top off the pathetic night I watched some show about sex for old people on PBS and ate pasta, garlic bread and mint chocolate chip ice cream in a weak attempt to incorporate some kind of Fat into my Tuesday. It was all very very sad.
03.03.03
Monday, March 3rd, 2003March is here and all is well again. The upcoming Cancun trip is full, Shamrock shakes are a-plenty and my Return to Fitness is in full swing, at least until tomorrow’s annual celebration at the Club Tavern of Fat Tuesday. Also, I’ve added Nuka’s awesome underwater photos to the Roatan page, although it still has a long way to go.
March 2003 update
Saturday, March 1st, 2003Although I thought I fared better than usual this February – my least favorite month – looking back it definitely had it’s fair share of misery. On the morning of the 1st I found myself landing at Dallas airport where it was deathly silent and nearly abandoned due to the space shuttle Columbia blowing up overhead just a couple hours earlier. Having flown in from Honduras and rushed to (eventually miss) our plane (by 4 minutes) we were oblivious to the tragedy until we found a TV in a bar where we watched CNN, and then local stations for several hours.
Back in cold Wisconsin, all went well for a few days until I found myself with pretty bad ear pain and no balance. My wipe outs provided a fair amount of amusement for my friends and coworkers, but the end result was a double inner ear infection which I didn’t find very amusing at all.
The third weekend took a turn for the better with a last minute trip to see my brother JeffO in Boulder, CO. Aside from two plane rides at 25,000 feet with double ear infections, JeffO’s excruciating back injury, and the beginning of the end of my current (now former) relationship, it was still pretty fun. It’s hard not to be happy driving a Lexus through mountains and sunshine while on your way to the Coors factory.
Lest you can’t take any more whining, you’re in luck because things improved there on out (… aside from little things like our President being hell-bent on war, etc.). A source of much joy was the long awaited bedroom carpet installation AND my new Mac G4, which means I can actually sleep in my bedroom and work in my office… things I haven’t done with much success since November. I was even able to have friends over a few times without having to explain why all my pants were hanging on my office desk on the landing. Very nice.
March’s calendar literally has 5 parties, 3 fun classes, driving school and a trip to Cancun on it outside of the hours of 8–5. Can’t complain about that. And today I had a bonus shamrock shake… bonus because they’re not supposed to start selling them until tomorrow. Clearly things are looking up.
