Nam et ipsa scientia potestas est

Thursday, October 24th, 2002

After 10 years of designing and 3 of Latin I’ve finally been enlightened as to where the “Lorem ipsum…” quote came from that we designers use to greek text. Turns out it was taken from a passage from Cicero – a treatise on the theory of ethics written in 45 BC. The original reads “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit . . . ” which roughly translated means “There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain”. He obviously wasn’t around when my high school friends and I spent several hours touching an electric fence in various formations to see who could get the worst shock.

I’m guessing Alvarez doesn’t have to pay for his filing cabinet

It’s rant time. We just published a news release here at work stating that the “Camp Randall renovation is back on track” due to a $10 million donation. Between that, and a new reduced $83.7 million price tag, (it’s not clear whether or not that includes the $11.2 million already spent) they should be able to get things rolling again by spring. Which leaves me a bit irked as I think about my filing cabinet, my carpet, my parking fee or any of the other things I’ve taken for granted at every other job but which I’ve paid for myself here due to our extreme budget crunch. Not to mention the fact that most of our department is severely understaffed, education and conferences have all but been eliminated and (unless it’s just me) salaries are a fraction of what they are in the corporate world. My point here is not to slam the UW but just raise the point that it’s pretty pathetic that society values sports, specifically football, more than education in an academic setting.

Ok, I’m done now.

Yo-ho, yo-ho, a sailor’s life for me

I have decided I need to make more money so I can buy a sailboat and live on the lake. This revelation came from my attendance at last night’s Mendota Yacht Club Award banquet, where Matt took home five silver cups between sailing on A and E scows. These people know how to live.

New England sailing pics up

The sailing trip is actually up on the website. Hallelujah. I’m still waiting for dingy-frisbee™ photos to come back, but the bulk of it is there. I also updated the fam page, and added the collections of each of the sibs. Jack has grown a lot in the last 7 years.

Still sick.

Had a brief interlude with society today – went to Target for cough medicine. Not impressed. Found the taco bell workers inside Target particularly not impressive. Going back to bed.

Still sick.

My last post?

Just returned from urgent care. Again. I went in a month ago with an ear infection and was either misdiagnosed or given the wrong prescription; regardless, they treated me for an outer ear infection when I had an inner ear infection. So now my throat, sinus and bronchial tract are infected, along with my inner ear. I am near death. Bring on the drugs.

October 2002 update

Driving to work today I noticed the leaves had started to change on Old Middleton Road, which is nice. At lunch I ended up making a quick trip home and was amazed to see all the same leaves on the South side of the street were almost completely yellow. By the time I drove home after work ALL the leaves were yellow. Is this normal? I always thought leave-color-changing was a gradual process. Apparently not. Probably something to due with El Ninő.

September was lovely. Lots of wicked-hot weather and low wind – perfect for wakeboarding. On the hottest of the days I moved all my office belongings from Bascom to WARF, where I now dwell with the Publications folks – the other half of our Communications department, in theory anyway. The whole thing has really been a mixed blessing. I get to park next to my building, but my car doesn’t get to look at the lake anymore. I have coworkers who know what dot gain is but no one to really eat lunch with. I have a fantastic view of the lake from my “area” but no longer have an office or, more importantly, a door. There’s a vent running along my window which makes for a great place to put plants but I think the ventilation is making me sick. There’s an endless supply of M&Ms in my room but it’s making me fat. This is beginning to sound like an Alannis song… I’ll stop now.

Ok, so highlights of September were hanging with JenO, discovering the best salsa ever, watching the Ironman, voyaging up to my Aunt and Uncle’s cabin in Mountain, WI and watching the National Annual North American Lumberjack Championship with Mj, installing OS X on my Mac at work, and watching Stacy shoot the moon on our very first hand of hearts last Friday.
