OS X

Monday, September 30th, 2002

With the exception of Quark, I am now running all apps natively on OS X now and loving it for the most part. It still takes me a while to find some of my files and it drives me crazy that I can’t view my files by the last modified date when opening them, but otherwise it’s a big improvement. Very stable.

Yay Audi!

Since I haven’t mentioned how much I love my car in a while, I thought I would comment on the wonderful experience I had yesterday getting my oil changed. I dropped Fiz off at 7:30, they gave me a ride to work, called me at noon, picked me up and then explained what they had done and why. Even fixed my squeaky window and washed the car (which was filthy from the great up north). All at no cost to me, taxi rides included.

Mountain, WI

Sunday, September 22nd, 2002

Just returned from the great up north — Mountain, WI, where my aunt and uncle have an awesome log cabin. Schroeder and I went up just to get out of town and do something different. So we spent our time fishing in a canoe, eating s’mores & pizza pudgy pies and, best of all, watching the North American Lumberjack Championships in Lakewood, WI on Saturday afternoon. Lots of large men with axes and chain saws, lots of locals, lots of beer. We even got to see some drama as one of the contestants in the Standing Chop managed to miss the block and swing the axe into his leg. Ironically he was the only person that we saw wearing any kind of leg guard but unfortunately it was on his other leg. Some people aren’t cut out to be lumberjacks.

Miracle on Walnut Street

There is a grasshopper on the outside of my window, who appears to be missing two of his legs on the right side. How does a grasshopper with only one hind leg hop straight up five stories of steel and glass?

Ironman Wisconsin

Sunday, September 15th, 2002

For all you out-of-towners’ information, little Madison was the fourth official site of the Ironman, held today. The weather was perfect, although with an overnight low in the 40s, it was a little chilly at 7 am for the start of the swim. I saw the transition from the swim to the bike which was really exciting – people still had energy and all but 2 of the 1803 competitors finished before they closed the course. So then I went home, went shopping, made lunch, took a nap, watered all my plants, painted some pots, cleaned my living room and THEN went back to see most of the run and some of the early finishers. I knew three people competing, all of whom did really well. My dad got a photo of one of them — Andy Wiers, who was a neighbor and best friend of my brother’s way back when. Last time I saw him he was about 9. He’s now 23, and ran the last 13 miles in a tux shirt, cummerbund and bow tie and finished 684/1800. *Note who is in the background of the picture. It’s Deb and Curt!

Flaw in the ointment

I’m still happy with iPowerWeb’s hosting abilities, customer service and prices but their affiliate program doesn’t seem to work. I only know this because two people signed up for hosting through my site and neither of their purchases were credited to my account. When I contacted iPowerWeb they sent me the affiliate check right away, but I guess I can consider any secondary tier commissions out the window, along with any anonymous signer-upers. Bummer.

View contains UW marching band

Tuesday, September 10th, 2002

Turns out the University band practices every single day at 3:00 below my window. Not so good. iPod and headphones to the rescue.

Also had another go with underwater hockey last night, which I hadn’t been to in more than a while. Everyone there is super nice but I am SO awful. Plus I got kicked pretty hard. Attendance next Monday seems doubtful.

A room with a view

I no longer work in Bascom Hall. Spent a lovely 92-degree day moving my office into my car, driving to WARF and then moving my office from my car to my new office. The Audi came thru yet again with flying colors as it took everything more or less in one shot, including my big purple office chair, full G4 and peripherals (thank god for flat screens), artwork, plants and files. So now I’m perched on the fifth floor, completely at home surrounded by creative people, pantone swatches and paper samples, staring out my two large windows at the lake. Not bad.

The reason I’m not a better wakeboarder

The new Arts sites Nick and I created went live yesterday. Arts on Campus highlights the programs, departments, events, venues, and news on campus related to arts – specifically dance, film, writing, theatre, visual arts and music. It has some depth to it, thanks to Nick’s database skills, and Mike Penn wrote the intro text for each section. Yay us. =] We also redesigned the Arts Institute site and a small site for Arts Night Out, which advertises a night of programs and activities for students and the Madison community on September 28. AND, as of yesterday, Nick is back from his paternity leave. Now back to my regularly scheduled summer….

September 2002 update

Wednesday, September 4th, 2002

Now that I’m back in the chaos of work/life it’s dawned on me that taking a lap top on my sailing trip might have been wise. Looking at my list of 43 things to do before the end of August (writing this on Sept. 4) I’m fondly remembering the hours of bobbing up and down on the ocean with nary a grocery list or unpainted kitchen ceiling in sight.

So, August was good, because half of it was spent in, on, around and occasionally under, the water surrounding CT, MA and RI. In the event that my brother ever gets his act together and sends me his digital pictures you can read all about that trip, if you’re so inclined, here.

A major highlight of the post-sailing month was hanging out with Matt & Big Mike on Big Mike’s fun ski boat on the Rock River. I’m not sure what was most impressive – Hu’s 360, Big Mike’s flip, Jack’s big air or my wipe outs. The time I temporarily lost my vision I really felt cool. =]

I also discovered the new ultimate pesto recipe, made with a mortar and pestle. The best I’ve ever tasted and, if you make a lot of it, it gives you arm muscles too.

A few other fun events – Cindy’s pool party, Shack’s bday party, seeing Curt’s band play, and finally getting an interior designer to look at my sad little kitchen. Her recommendation for two-tone purple cabinetry has me a little cautious but at least I’m moving forward.

Work was about the same as July – pretty much miserable. I think I worked every day after the 11th, but at least now I have a few sites launched to show for it. I have high hopes for the future though as Nick returned from his paternity leave today and on Monday I move to the WARF building, where almost all the other creatives in our department reside. AND there’s parking, it’s closer to my house and the Nat, it doesn’t flood, and I have a window facing the lake. All good. If I could take some Bascom people and the MU terrace with me I’d be all set.
