It’s a miracle

Monday, June 24th, 2002

My rose bush is blooming. While some people would call this an act of god anyway, this really is a true miracle. A friend gave this to me a few years ago when I moved in, and in all the moving-in chaos I kinda forgot about it in the garage. When I found it several (like 12) months later it was moldy and box-bound but not completely dead so I stuck it in the ground and now I have beautiful roses. Yet another plant that thrives on neglect. Excellent! <smithers>

In sum

I can see that this is just not going to get updated as much as summer kicks in. Which is unfortunate because I actually have a life in summer, and adventures worth writing about. To summarize the last week or two though I’ll say 420s are awesome boats, I still can’t jump the %@# wake, the new pitchers at the terrace are stupid, I should have a ton of tax money coming back, the farmers market is as awesome as ever, it turns out you really can use 5 weeks of vacation and still want more, and kids are getting married way too young these days.

Not good

My kitchen ceiling is dripping. Unfortunately my kitchen is not the top floor. I’m sensing a theme in my life.

Water water everywhere

Monday, June 3rd, 2002

Ah, Monday. I awoke to pouring rain and a slight headache due to lack of sleep and consuming too much wine the night before while debating free will with the brothers McCaffrey – Pat the meat slayer and John the psych major. While walking from my car to my office on campus I got hit with another blast of wind (see 10 May 02) in the exact same spot as last time but this time my umbrella took the brunt of it. I arrived at work, dripping wet, umbrella in hand – now in a unique trapezoidal shape – and found my office flooded. Which is sad, but considering my G4, a file server and a dozen other pieces of computer equipment were inches away from standing water, it was also kind of dangerous. So I’m back home now, in my dry, cheery home office adorned in slippers and sipping hot tea with a bathroom not 15 feet from my desk, and a stocked kitchen available to me at lunch. (I mention the bathroom only because the closest bathroom to me at work is up four flights of stairs which is annoying and, one would think, against building codes.) So maybe it all worked out for the better. Back to work…

Another day supposedly at the office

My brother Jeff on any given day of the week. Life is so hard for some people.

June 2002 update

Summer’s here. =] Arrived a bit late this year, but now that I have been out on the lake all hard feelings are forgotten.

Looking back at May I realized I ate a lot. The weather was horrid so outdoor activities were at a minimum but that didn’t cut down on the number of gatherings so I think we were all forced to just eat. Some of the better food came from Tortillas, Uno’s, Morels, Carrie & Matt’s baby shower, an Ice cream social at Christensen’s, the Farmers Market, White Horse Inn, and various grills at the famhouse, Deb & Curts and Vilas. On the downside were the nachos at the Club Tavern. Their guacamole smells and tastes like feet.

Luckily the weather took a turn for the better last week so my summer diet has kicked in, which has nothing to do with eating less and everything to do with sailing, biking, rollerblading, wakeboarding and running. Way better than eating celery in my opinion.

I also made a somewhat-major purchase a couple weeks ago. After researching mp3 players for a month, I decided to go with the 5 GB iPod. This is the most amazing little thing I’ve ever owned. Not only do I have my favorite 200+ songs on it (with room for hundreds more), but you can partition off the drive and use it to transfer data… so I can take huge graphic files back and forth to work. And firewire is SO fast. It takes a couple of seconds to download an entire CD! Plus, with a tape or frequency converter I can use it with any stereo system… at home, in the car or boat, and contrary to the reviews I don’t think it’s difficult to jog with at all. The whole thing is about the size of a deck of cards, which is far smaller than my last walkman. I’m using iTunes and Limewire apps with it and it’s all pretty seamless. So, if you’re looking for a mp3 player, this one or the 10GB iPod is the way to go. Unless you’re a PC user… but then quality, performance and style probably aren’t very important to you anyway… go with a Sony.

Ouch. =]
