What a difference a year makes

Tuesday, January 29th, 2002

So this morning at the gym I was running along on the treadmill and the news on the Today show is featuring some guy discussing how torture would most likely be used in the upcoming weeks/months to help us “win the war”. The issue at hand seemed to be whether or not this should be done in the presence of a judge who had ruled that a particular enemy be tortured or if it should be done covertly, “off the books”, in order save the public from all this unpleasantness (and, presumably, avoid those pesky US laws). The speaker then explained the torture would probably consist of something very efficient – needles underneath the fingernails for example – something that would get the bad guys to talk with minimal effort on our part and without any unnecessary suffering for them. How thoughtful. All of this on the morning news. What a difference a year makes.

Also, I got my new Visor Edge today. While I can hardly complain about the customer service (it’s amazing), I’m wondering why it took 9 days to send the first one and less than 24 hours to send the second one. Hmmm.

PDA, take II

I have discovered that the back-lighting on my Edge is faulty. They’re sending a new one.

Gotta love priceline, again.

Frustrating work week. If you happen to be a print designer working with web designers please read this.

Left it to Brown, Brown left it.

According to the tracking provided by UPS, my visor edge was on a truck at the Middleton UPS warehouse at 4:57 a.m. this morning. This is about 3 miles from my house. By 4 p.m. it was somewhere in Ohio, having been left on the wrong truck. They’re now going to express ship it so I can have it by noon tomorrow. I suggested they use FedEx but they didn’t seem amused.

Visor Edge is ordered

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2002

Despite my temptation to resist moving into ’00s (or ’90s for that matter) when it comes to calendar technology, I ordered a Visor Edge today. It was on sale and I can’t find a decent book calendar, so I’m selling out. Should be here in 4-6 days.

Book recommendation

While recovering from all the festivities of late I have been reading A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Bryson describes his trek from Georgia to Maine on the Appalachian Trail, and it is hysterical. I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying this book and highly recommend it.

Happy New Year! Kinda.

January 2002 update

Tuesday, January 1st, 2002

Life is good. I not only survived the holiday season this year, but reveled in it, surrounded by family and friends. I think my new car and the warm temperatures in November and December have made me deliriously happy. Plus all my siblings voyaged home and a few friends who live on faraway coasts came to visit, providing a variety of entertainment, good conversation and a bit of sleep deprivation. (Which might be a more logical cause for my euphoria.) Christmas, Jeff’s graduation, Matthew’s departure and New Year’s were all celebrated in fine form and while January promises to be quite the letdown by comparison, the timing is perfect. If this were to continue I might become one of those dreadful cheery-all-the-time people.

So on January’s exciting agenda I have several books to finish, plans to find my health club (and long-lost muscles) again and a 2-week class called “Getting to know your sewing machine”. No joke. This, hopefully, will be followed by the mass production of window treatments to replace 5 levels worth of dusty not-my-taste curtains which came with the house. This month’s babble is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat…
