I love to travel. In fact, I think the reason I'm still in Madison
is because I've found it to be the perfect home base from which
to depart. It's usually cold enough to want to leave and I have
enough friends and family here to make me want to return. Traveling
opens your eyes, your mind, your heart and gives you a very keen
sense of who you are, very quickly. There's nothing that gives you
perspective more so than being forced to communicate in a different
language, looking down into the Swiss Alps, or getting peed on while
sleeping under a park bench because the hostels are all full.

One of my smarter moves in life was to drive out to
San Diego when I "moved" there in '98, rather than fly.
I took the scenic southern route, staying with friends every night,
and saw a lot of landscape I didn't know existed in the US. Taking
the northern route on the trip back (a month later) was even better.
Turns out there is quite a bit to see here in the U.S.

With the exception of about a dozen trips to Mexico,
my trips abroad have been pretty limited. In 1998 I was fortunate
enough to have a couple months off between jobs so I spent a few
weeks backpacking around southern Europe with my sister. The next
spring I returned to the little country of Malta with my dad and
then sailed across the Ionian Sea to Corfu, Greece. And then my
most recent overseas trip was to Roatan, Honduras. Future desirable
destinations include the east coast of Africa and northern Europe
but those trips are still presently in dream stage.
